GPA (Grade Point Average) is the main measure of academic performance at US and Canadian colleges, and many scholarships and graduate programmes ask for it. Here's what the numbers mean.
What is a good GPA?
| GPA | Letter average | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| 3.7–4.0 | A- to A | Excellent, competitive for top programmes |
| 3.3–3.6 | B+ | Very good |
| 3.0–3.2 | B | Good, meets most graduate requirements |
| 2.5–2.9 | B- to C+ | Average |
| Below 2.5 | C or lower | May affect scholarships or probation |
Many graduate schools and employers use 3.0 as a minimum, and competitive programmes often look for 3.5 or above.
How GPA is calculated
Each letter grade has a point value (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on). Multiply each by the course's credit hours, add them up, and divide by your total credits. Our free GPA calculator does this for you and also works out your cumulative GPA.
Converting UK, Indian and Australian grades
There's no single official conversion, because each university and credential-evaluation service uses its own. As a rough guide only:
- UK: a First is often treated as about 3.7–4.0, a 2:1 as about 3.3–3.7, and a 2:2 as about 2.7–3.0.
- India: first division with distinction (75%+) is often treated as about 3.7–4.0, and first division (60–74%) as about 3.0–3.6.
- Australia: HD and Distinction averages are usually treated as A-range, Credit as B-range.
For applications, always use the conversion your target university or evaluation service specifies. To understand the original systems, see our guides to the UK grading system and the Australian grading system.
How to raise your GPA
- Focus on high-credit courses. A 4-credit course moves your GPA more than a 1-credit one.
- Use office hours. Ask what an A answer looks like before the assignment, not after.
- Plan around deadlines. Our assignment planner breaks big projects into daily steps.
- Learn from feedback. Keep a list of comments and check every new assignment against it.
- Check retake policies. Some colleges replace a failed grade when you retake the course.
