APA 7 at Coventry: the mistakes we see most
The Coventry University Group moved from its own Harvard guide to APA 7th edition from September 2020. Students who learned Harvard at school or college often slip on these points:
- "&" vs "and": APA 7 uses "&" inside brackets, (Smith & Jones, 2023), and "and" in running text.
- Three or more authors: cite the first author plus "et al." from the first citation.
- DOIs: written as full links, for example https://doi.org/..., with no full stop at the end.
- Titles: sentence case for article and book titles, with the journal name and volume in italics.
- Reference list: alphabetical by first author's surname, with a hanging indent.
